One of the most outrageous things taking place in our State that no one really knows about, is the millions of Dollars soda companies are making out of unreturned bottles.
Oh and I'm part of that problem. I don't return them.
Now the Iowa Legislature might finally be about to do something about it.
Last Wednesday, the Iowa Senate passed a bill that would allow grocery stores and retailers to opt out of the bottle redemption system starting in 2023, but would increase the handling fee from one cent to 3 cents. Many feel that would be enough to convince them to stay.
The House has its own version that would go to two cents.
According to KCCI, Steve Terlouw has owned a redemption center in Newton for nearly 15 years. With roughly 250,000 containers returned each week, Terlouw says the pennies add up quick.
"You take a million cans, you make $10,000," he said. Clearly if his return went to three cents, that would increase to $30,000.
