(Des Moines, IA) -- A man's dead after being hit by a car while fighting with a Des Moines police officer on the city's south side. Police say an officer was trying to arrest the 31-year-old Des Moines man in the 3700 block of Southeast 14th Street Monday night but he ran away. Police say the officer caught up to the suspect near Southeast 14th Street and Watrous Avenue and tried to arrest him when a car drove by and hit both of them. The suspect has since died and the officer is in the hospital but is expected to survive. Police say the suspect had a narcotics-related warrant out for his arrest and a barred driver's license. Police say the driver of the car, a 28-year-old woman from Ames, won't be charged because the crash was unavoidable.
