(Omaha, NE) -- Snow removal plans have been set for the protected bike lane on Harney Street in Omaha.

Julie Harris, with Bike Walk Nebraska, tells 6 News bicycling on Harvey Street from Turner Boulevard to 10th Street has increased by 132-percent since the bike lane opened in July.

“We know people ride year-round, we have the data to show that, and now, not only do we have a protected space, but they’ll have it cleared,” she said. “You know we clear the trails for people to use for walking and biking, and this will be just the same, and we’ll be anxious to see how it impacts the data.”

Harris says keeping the lane clear of snow will factor into the project's success.

The city of Omaha plans on snowplowing the bike lane following the same rules as the roads, with 24-hour removal service after a snowfall of 2 or more inches.

The Harvey Street bike lane is part of a project that will run through next fall, managed by the Metro Smart Cities.
