(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowans are marking 20-years since the deadly terror attacks in New York, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Volunteers installed 2,977 American flags today (Friday) at Gray's Lake Park in Des Moines. Each flags represents one person killed in the attacks.

Diane Johanson of Urbandale was among the volunteers installing the flags. "It is truly a day we should never forget, we as Americans never expected something like this to happen on our home land."

The Tribute Trail of flags will remain in place until Monday, September 13th.

Tomorrow (Saturday), there will be a bell ringing at 8:45 a.m. near the Iowa Capitol building to commemorate the anniversary. Following the event, visitors will be welcomed to the Iowa Historical Building to view a special 9-11 exhibit.
