(Bettendorf, IA) The United Way of the Quad Cities says demand has been strong for a new k-12 tutoring matching service. President and CEO Rene Gellerman says they have 25-tutors signed up and are recruiting more. She says they're pairing education majors from area colleges with families who have remote learners. She says they are recruiting more as well as retired teachers interested in the program.
The United Way recommends parents pay $15 per hour, but that is negotiable. Some tutors are willing to take on more than one child. There are also scholarships available.
"There's never been a more important time for a community to come together, to figure out how we can support these kids, so they can succeed in school," said Gellerman. She says they're concerned about kids who are learning remotely will get behind, and become discouraged. She says she hopes the program is a great relief to parents and students who are learning remotely because of the pandemic.
