AMES, Iowa - The Ames City Council could vote on changes to its police policies after discussing a new report.
City Manager Steve Schainker has offered 21 recommendations, including the hiring of a diversity coordinator Tuesday night.
He compiled a 45-page report after the city received a high level of public reaction from the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Among other things, the report recommends an ordinance prohibiting racial profiling and bias among city employees, and the creation of a Citizen Police Advisory Committee.
Overall, the report deals with nine categories: Organizational culture, police officer recruitment and selection, police officer training, department policies, City ordinances and State law, transparency of records, accountability in complaint handling and discipline, communication, and funding.
