Inmate at State Prison in Coralville Dies From COVID-19

CORALVILLE, Iowa - An inmate at the state prison in Coralville is dead from COVID-19.

The Department of Corrections says 77-year-old Richard Leroy Peters also had multiple pre-existing conditions when he died Sunday at 1:45 p.m. in a hospice room at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC).

The department says he was being housed at IMCC because of chronic illness and complications related to COVID-19.

Peters had been serving a 25-year sentence for multiple convictions of 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse. His sentence began in 2014.

Peters is the fourth Iowa prison inmate to die from COVID-19.

The IMCC facility currently has 74 inmates with the virus. There are 132 inmates with COVID-19 at the state prison in Mt. Pleasant, and one case reported at the prison in Newton.
