Former Des Moines City Councilor Dies

DES MOINES, Iowa - Former Des Moines city councilman Tom Vlassis is dead at age 84.

Vlassis was a lifelong Des Moines resident who attended North High School before serving in the Air Force. He later received a degree in pharmacy at the city's Drake University, and went on to own several pharmacies in the metro area.

He married his wife, Sophie Vlassis, in 1976. She died in 2017.

Vlassis was elected as a Des Moines Ward 1 City Council member in 1988,and held the position until being unseated in 2010.

He was a member of several groups while serving as a council member, including the the Central Iowa Employment and Training Consortium.

The Tom & Sophie Vlassis Greenway on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway is named after the former city councilor and his wife.
