Des Moines' Blank Park Zoo Reviving Lighted Display

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines is reviving an attraction that proved popular earlier in the COVID-19 outbreak.

Thousands of people drove through its “Scoop the ‘Lighted’ Zoo Loop” in early April. The zoo is bringing back the display of lighted animals in its parking lot and inviting the public to view the lights while staying their cars.

The Zoo Loop will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday night between 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. both this weekend and next weekend (May 7-9).

The zoo says the concept was inspired by teacher parades and the Iowa tradition of "scooping the loop" cruise nights.

“We wanted to create an event that allows people to get out of the house, but stay in the car and follow social distancing guidelines,” said Blank Park Zoo Anne Shimerdla, president and COO. “We are following the guidelines of local and state officials.”

Admission will be free, and Blank Park Zoo will be encouraging donations.
