DES MOINES, Iowa - A majority of Iowans are in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana.

A new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows 53% favor recreational marijuana use, the first time it's shown majority support.

The number has steadily risen since the poll started asking the question in 2013.

In that poll, only 29% supported legalizing recreational marijuana.

According to the newspaper's latest survey, 75% percent of people under 35 favor legalizing recreational marijuana, while 56% of people between 35-54 support its legalization. Support drops to 34% among those 55 and older. Men and women support legalization at roughly the same rate - 54% for men and 53% for women

The poll is based on a sample of 800 Iowa adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
