Council Bluffs Neighborhood Evacuated Due To Gas Leak

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - An area near 21st Street and Avenue B in Council Bluffs is secure after a large gas leak around 10 a.m. That leak prompted an evacuation of a number of homes around leak area.

WOWT 6 News reports that Council Bluffs Police Sgt. Matt Brinkman said, "We were able to get everybody out safely."Some of those evacuated took shelter in a nearby church. The evacuation was a safety precaution.

Officials determined the leak was caused by someone digging in the area and broke a line. Black Hills Energy was called to the scene and had the leak secured by 11:30. Air quality was not a concern.

Black Hills Energy is now working on repairs.That may slow or detour traffic.
