Des Moines PD charges man who exchanged gunfire with officers

A Des Moines man who exchanged gunfire with police officers now faces criminal charges.

21 year old Benjamin Perry is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon on a police officer, eluding and carrying weapons.

Shortly before 1am Thursday morning, officers were asked to help locate Perry, who was suicidal and was reportedly armed with a weapon.  Des Moines Police officer saw him at 31st Street and I-235 and gave chase.  During the chase, Perry fired at the officers, one of which returned fire.

At the northbound lanes of I-35, Story County officers were able to stop his vehicle with stop sticks.

Noone was injured.  Perry was taken to a hospital for observation, then was taken to the Polk County Jail.  Bond is set at $12,000 cash or surety.
